------------- Repair and Rehabilitation of Concrete Structures --------------- By, Poonam I. Modi & Chirag N. Patel

Since the subject of repairs and  rehabilitation is very exhaustive and entails great complexities / varieties in terms of types of distress / deterioration, materials and techniques available for repairs and rehabilitations, it has always been a daunting task for the authors to select aspects to be covered in this book.

Following sections gives the panoramic view of this book organized into six chapters:

Chapter 1 (Introduction)  gives quick overview and relevance of repairs and rehabilitation of structures besides outlining general scenario of prevalence of deterioration of concrete structures, broad reasons for distress in structures explaining what can go wrong with structures, and a general roadmap and steps to be followed for carrying out any structural repairs and rehabilitation. This section also defines some of the important terms that are used in this book.

Chapter 2 (Distress in Structures- Serviceability and Durability Aspects of Concrete)  elucidates in detail causes and symptoms of distress and deterioration in masonry walls and RCC structures. As the distress and deterioration of concrete is really an intricate phenomena normally triggered by actions of combination of causes, it is very important to establish the primary causes of the damage observed on the structure, so as to enable us find the most appropriate materials and methods to rectify or arrest the further damage. This chapter, therefore, attempts to explain in detail the basic causes and mechanism of damage and deterioration in structures. The chapter also reflects on durability and permeability aspects inherent in concrete as its understanding is very important in comprehending mechanism of distress and deterioration in concrete. This chapter also discusses at the end, most common causes and characteristics of cracks in RCC structural members, so that students can relate the  symptoms and signs of distress to its causes.

Chapter 3 (Evaluation of RCC Structures)  captures in detail various aspects involved in assessment and evaluation of existing structures, like type of structure; its dimensions; materials used in original construction; repair and rehabilitation history; extent of distress and deterioration over the span of its use; the past, current and the future intended use and current building code status of the structure, etc. Correct understandings of these aspects are very crucial because in most cases the original design basis, layout and specifications are not available. This chapter provides roadmap for evaluation of existing RCC structures by covering conditional and detailed assessment and evaluation, various method s for insitu and laboratory testing of concrete (invasive, semi-invasive and non-invasive) besides methodology to be followed for Interpretation and reporting of NDT results and preparation of detailed investigation report. This chapter will help students to identify critical structural parameters and properties needed to be collected before / during the assessment and evaluation, and in getting acquainted with various tests (destructive and non-destructive) available for sampling and collecting desired data for assessment / evaluation and practical application of these test methods.

Chapter 4 (Concrete Repair Systems  -  Materials and Techniques for repair)  deals in detail, one of the most important aspects of concrete repairs and rehabilitation. As we know, concrete repair is an intricate, complex composite system needing in-depth understanding / knowledge on available materials and techniques for repairs and their compatibility with structures being repaired. Correct understanding of these would help select best material-technique options for the repairs and rehabilitation. This chapter by including these aspects aims to acquaint students with various factors that leads to selection of appropriate materials and techniques for concrete repairs.

Chapter 5 (Retrofitting and Strengthening of Structures)  attempts to familiarize students with crucial aspects involved in retrofitting and strengthening of RCC struct ures. Rehabilitation of building structures through retrofitting and strengthening has always been a challenging task as it calls for number of interventions so as to enhance / restore structural level performance by addressing number of parameters (i.e. stiffness, strength and ductility) that influences load carrying capacity or seismic performance of the structure. This often involves changes in the structural system like addition of structural members, modification of shapes of structural members, use of   appropriate material technique from the extensive possibilities based on wide -varieties of artificial resins, reinforced polymers. This chapter adequately covers important aspects related to retrofitting and strengthening, like structural conditions needing retrofitting / strengthening, retrofitting strategies / techniques for RCC structures at member and structural level.

Chapter 6 (Miscellaneous topics)  covers some of the important aspects related to this area, but not finding adequate focus in the earlier chapters of this book. Some of these topics (i.e. Quality Control in concrete during construction, water leakage  -detection and mitigation, Corrosion mitigation and maintenance of concrete structures) are related to preventive maintenance practice, while others like Fire Damage – damage and mitigation and demolition of buildings are related to either rehabilitation or
structural safety measures.

Authors have included few review questions at the end of every chapter to enable students to test the level of understanding they have gained reading through these chapters.

IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016 - Criteria For Earthquake Resistant Design Of Structures - General Provisions And Buildings

The provisions of this standard are applicable for design of structures like parking structures, security cabins and ancillary structures taking into account appropriate earthquake effects as per this standard. This standard is also applicable for design of temporary elements, such as scaffolding and temporary excavations. This standard does not deal with construction features relating to earthquake resistant buildings and other structures. For guidance on earthquake -resistant construction of buildings, reference may be made to the latest revisions of the following Indian Standards:  IS 4326, IS 13827, IS 13828, IS 13920, IS 13935 and IS 15988. The provisions of this standard are applicable even to critical and special structures, like nuclear power plants, petroleum refinery plants and large dams. For such structures, additional requirements may be imposed based on special studies, such as site-specific hazard assessment. In such cases, the earthquake effects specified by
